The true story of a young mother’s tragedy…so you may avoid the same disaster that she faced…
I was a professional. Working my hardest to make a living for myself and my family. I had just bought a new Laurelwood house in Waterloo, had an overweight bijon frieze dog named Mercedes.
She was a mother of 2, with one on the way. Her husband worked hard in the construction trade, loved his family and had just built a new house on the hill.
Unfortunately our paths crossed in the worst way I could imagine.
I got the call and I felt a pit in my stomach immediately. Put yourself in my shoes for a minute…you have a client or customer you’ve been helping get up and going and all of a sudden he calls to tell you to cancel the order, because he has brain cancer.
I didn’t even know what to say, in fact…as I write this I still feel sick just thinking about this poor young family.
Dad is going to die.
I know this is something none of us ever want to think about, much less talk or read about, but this happened to me, and to her…and I think she’d want others to avoid dealing with the nightmare that happened to them.
Her husband’s name was Steve. Steve had mentioned that he wanted to look into some life insurance as we got his other business insurance policies going.
So we put together a quote and sent it up to him.
But Steve was a busy guy. He had employee’s do deal with, trucks and equipment with his company. Plus he had the kids to play with when he got home. And then of course he loved to camp, fish and Thursday evening softball…life insurance was really the furthest thing from his mind.
I called him a few times. My assistant even called him to let him know that we hadn’t received his signed application or cheque to get the policy going.
Each time he thanked us for the call, and told us “I’ll take care of it, don’t worry.”
I don’t know if he thought we were trying to sell him something just for our sake, but the truth is, we weren’t making much money on the policy anyway. I just wanted to make sure he got the coverage he needed before it was too late.
I can’t say I blame him, in fact it’s human nature to procrastinate those things that are uncomfortable to deal with…and thinking about death is one of those things.
Unfortunately…that never happened.
Steve never ‘got around to it.’
Soon after those conversations, phone calls and reminders, Steve was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died shortly thereafter.
It was a terrible day when we got the news. And if you can imagine it getting any worse…it did. Steve didn’t have ANY life insurance…his wife had no money to pay the bills for the funeral, much less pay for her mortgage, kids education and future.
I know this is a very sensitive subject. My intent is never to ‘scare’ you into buying something you don’t need.
It’s never about that.
It’s about seeing a tragedy… made much, much worse because a simple paper wasn’t signed. For less than the cost of a dinner at Applebee’s each month, an entire family was left un protected, and financially destitute.
Steve’s wife sold off the equipment, and the trucks to pay for the funeral and other expenses, and in the end was left wondering how she was going to pay for the next house payment.
But I can’t plead with you enough…PLEASE don’t wait until something happens. As I sit here typing this into my computer, I wonder about my own vulnerabilities. Will some unfair and untimely tragedy strike me or my family without notice?
Unfortunately, we just never know. And that is why it’s so important to simply be prepared.
